W.Va. combating deer crashes
PARKERSBURG - West Virginia's Division of Natural Resources and Department of Transportation are teaming up with an insurance company to reduce the number of deer/vehicle collisions in the state.
The long-term goal of the collaboration with The State Farm Mutual Auto Insurance Company is to identify the least expensive strategies in reducing the number of vehicle accidents involving deer.
Jeff McCrady, wildlife biologist with the DNR, said deer accidents in West Virginia are common.
"In West Virginia, you have the highest probability of hitting a deer than in most states," he said. "A lot of that has to do with population size."
According to a study by State Farm, one in 53 West Virginia drivers will hit a deer in the next 12 months. West Virginia was ranked the most crash-prone state for the fifth straight year. On average, the collisions cost $3,171 in repairs.
The agencies are preparing a proposal request to hire an independent contractor to begin the initial phase of the project, which will include reviewing mitigation techniques used throughout the country, conducting a cost analysis and evaluating the potential of the techniques for use in West Virginia.
Data collected over the years by DNR and DOT will serve as a jumping off point for the first phase. Many "hot spots," or areas with a high vehicle/deer collision rate, have already been determined by the state agencies.
"There are all kinds of ways people have tried to prevent deer accidents. Whether or not they are all effective, I can't say," said McCrady. "I've seen some people mount deer whistles on their cars, which emit an ultra-sonic sound that supposedly scares away deer. "
Another technique used to deter deer is placing reflective materials near the roadways.
"Simply cutting back vegetation and grass from the road can be effective because it allows the driver to see better," said McCrady.
Phase 2 of the project will involve testing and applying the mitigation techniques in the "hot spots" and tracking the results.
