Repossessed car was reported stolen

A woman whose car Memramcook disappeared last September reported the vehicle stolen and then spent three weeks driving a rental car provided by his insurance company.

The RCMP investigated the theft, but could not locate the car, probably because he has never actually been stolen.

It was taken, impounded and then delivered to an auction house to sell.

A judge from Moncton, the wife knew exactly where his car was still left police continue to investigate the matter.

"She continued with the deception, she told police and fraud against the insurance company because she wanted to keep the rental car," said provincial court Judge Irwin Lampert yesterday morning.

Deborah Sappier has advocated during his recent trial on a charge of committing a public mischief with the intent to mislead the police and get them to undertake an investigation.

She returned to court for the verdict yesterday and was found guilty of the charge.

Lampert was placed on probation for one year and ordered to perform 90 hours of community service.

She was also ordered to pay $ 892 in restitution to Wawanesa Insurance, which is for the cost of car rental.

If she succeeds, she will receive probation parole, which means it will record.

"Police have many other important things to do," said the judge, explaining why public mischief is a serious charge.

The incident occurred Sept. 14, 2010.

Sappier car was towed because the payments were not made.

The court heard she had bought the car from his sister a few years earlier.

She testified that a neighbor told him the car was towed and she called the police and his insurance company.

She said she did not know until weeks later that the car was stolen.

But during the trial the Crown called the bailiff, who took over possession of the vehicle and the owner of the tow truck company, to testify.
