Resurging manufacturing gave Trumbull County one of the nation's best percentage gains in compensation in 2010 - and one economic development expert sees the trend continuing.

"I imagine that, going forward, it'll be a nice, steady mid- to high-single digit percent progression," Eric Planey, vice president for Regional Chamber international business attraction, said after a government study Wednesday that showed Trumbull with a 6.7 percent gain in total compensation for 2010 over 2009 to $3.51 billion from $3.29 billion.

The county was one of fewer than a dozen of Ohio's 88 counties with a gain of 4.5 percent or better, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported.

Compensation includes wages and salaries, along with supplements and employer contributions to pensions, insurance funds and government social insurance.

Durable-goods manufacturing, such as steel and automaking, fueled Trumbull's rebound. The category posted a 22.7 percent increase in compensation to $1.02 billion from $831.6 million in 2009.

The General Motors Co. Lordstown Complex added a third shift of 1,200 in 2010 to prepare to launch the Chevrolet Cruze compact car. The expansion boosted payroll about $47 million for the local economy.

The RG Steel Warren steel mill, owned by Severstal at the time, restarted operations in March 2010, eventually recalling nearly 1,000 hourly workers.

Besides paying among the best wages in the area, both employers also create good-paying jobs at smaller support businesses in the so-called job multiplier effect.

The study reaffirmed the importance of manufacturing, an auto union leader said.

"When our country was strongest, we had a solid manufacturing base," said Jim Graham, president of United Auto Workers Local 1112 at the Lordstown East assembly plant. "Since they started outsourcing manufacturing jobs, we've lost that grip. We have to look to foreign countries for help."
