Josh Brodesky: Goodness gracious - how dispiriting can Romney get?
It's not really Mitt Romney's fault that his renewed presidential campaign is totally disheartening.
Yes, in person he looks like a Ken doll and comes across as a flexible Ward Cleaver, with his wholesome style, humanistic views of corporations and eagerness to vilify teachers unions.
"My, goodness gracious!" he exclaimed as he entered the packed room for his hourlong roundtable with Tucson's business leaders last week.
His hair never moved during that talk, even when he spoke with ardent passion about ... deregulation.
No, what's discouraging about Romney's presidential bid is that between the president's utter failure to deliver on his promise of hope and change, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry's populist surge and uncertainty about evolution and Social Security, Romney just might be the best option of the real contenders.
He's won over the Clicker, who brought him to town for a roundtable and luncheon fundraiser ($250 a head). Not just a car dealer, Jim Click Jr. has introduced three former presidents to Tucson - Reagan, Bush 41 and Bush 43 - and now he's hoping to add Romney to the list.
"I am more excited about you, and what you can do for this country at this time," Click said to Romney during his introduction. "Mr. Tuttle always told me when our country needed somebody to step forward, somehow this country brought forward somebody who was a great leader."
Click was introduced to politics by his father's uncle, Holmes Tuttle, a wealthy West Coast car dealer who advised Ronald Reagan.
Sporting a pink tie, khakis and a blue blazer, Romney was right at home with the biz crowd where incomes start at six figures and work their way up and up and up.
"I spent my life doing what you do," he said. "I spent my life in business. Small business, and then it became a bigger business, and I learned from those experiences."
"Right now there is a perspective on the part of many in government that business is the enemy," he went on. "That every business person's doing something bad. We gotta find you out, hold you down, regulate everything you do.
