HGV Drivers have the Best Road Knowledge, Swinton Commercial Survey Reveals

HGV drivers have the greatest road knowledge out of all road users according to a survey by leading UK business insurance broker, Swinton Commercial.

Swinton Commercial surveyed 2,200 road users to find out who had the best road knowledge based on questions devised from the Highway Code. The survey revealed that 77% of HGV drivers correctly identified all twenty randomly chosen road signs taken from the Highway Code.

Only 63% of motorists correctly identified the road signs, as did 59% of van drivers. Cyclists fared the worst with only 42% accurately recognising the twenty road signs.

The survey by the commercial insurance broker also revealed that HGV drivers were seen as the most courteous on the road, with 44% 'frequently' giving way to other motorists compared to just 37% of car drivers.

Sean Thompson, New Business Manager at Swinton Commercial said: "Naturally, HGV drivers spend most of their time on the road so it is vital that they are up to speed with the Highway Code and driving etiquette."

He added: "Common courtesy costs nothing so it is important for all road users to remember that their actions behind the wheel can have a real impact on other motorists."
