Car Sharing Service Debuts At UC

CINCINNATI -- Students at the University of Cincinnati won't need a car or insurance to get around with the arrival of Zipcars.

The automobile-sharing program allows licensed drivers to use a car even if they don't own one.

"Without a car, it's kind of been, hey friend, will pick me up and take me there?" said students Luci Simon.

Zipcars began operating Friday at the Clifton campus, and students can sign up online for a $25 flat fee and then reserve the car for as little as an hour or as long as four days. Hourly rates are about $7 or $66 per day, and the cost includes fuel and insurance.

UC faculty, staff and students receive discounted annual membership rates, which are partially subsidized by Ford and cost $25, with $35 in free driving credits.

UC members must be at least 18 years old, while other members must be at least 21 years old.

"I'm not the best parallel parker, so I don't like having a car down here with the narrow streets, trying to find a spot," Simon said. "Plus, it's just inconvenient because everything is so close together, but occasionally it's nice to have a car to get to Kenwood, to get to Rookwood Pavillion."

The cars are remotely locked through a wireless signal, so they cannot be used unless there is an active reservation.

"The engine is turned off, the doors are locked (and) it will not start, and when you have an active registration, only your card will unlock the car," said Claire Sweigert, UC's sustainability coordinator.

Even some students who own cars said they'd consider signing up for Zipcars.

"I just like the sustainability ideas behind the whole Zipcar program, that you can go anywhere in the nation if you're traveling and just share a car there," said student Jake Szendrski.

General Rules for Auto Insurance Student Discounts

Young drivers pay more for insurance because they tend to get into more accidents and pay more claims. Insurers, ever the statistical magicians, have determined that good students make better drivers, probably because in order to be a good student you have to pay attention to the little things, like whether or not you’re in the right lane.

While the student discounts for auto insurance vary–which is why you need to check the services of at least three auto insurers online whenever you make an auto insurance purchase–there are some general rules:

You must be 25 years or younger. For some states the ages range from 16 to 24, while 21 is the cutoff age for others. You must be single. You need a “B” average or better. Or you need a GPA of 3.0 or better. You need to make Honor Roll or Dean’s List. This is not required but can be used as a substitute if you don’t meet the “B” Average or GPA standards.

Remember, these are general standards and might not apply to every auto insurance company, but those are the basic guidelines from what’s been online. For example, GEICO’s guidelines also include home school students based on their scores on standardized tests, as well as top 20 percent scores on SAT, ACT, or PSAT scores. Don’t forget to shop around. You might even need to consult with an agent.
