Southern Illinois banker sent to prison
Mary S. Becker, 57, of Jerseyville, was sentenced in federal court Tuesday for bank fraud, Stephen R. Wigginton, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, announced.
Becker received a sentence of 63 months in prison, a $100 special assessment, five years supervised release and mandatory restitution in the amount of $4,450,000.
The bank fraud took place from at least 2003 through January 2011 in Jersey County. Some of her property traceable to the bank fraud violation was turned over to Jersey State Bank, including two condominiums in Osage Beach, Mo., a 38-foot boat, vehicles, trailers, motorcycles and bank stock. Other assets belonging to Becker will be forfeited.
"This sentence is a severe, but just, penalty for such a horrific breach of trust perpetrated by Ms. Becker,” said Wigginton. “Just because you steal without using a weapon does not entitle you to special treatment. Fraudsters, scammers and thieves will be prosecuted so that we may all be secure in our business dealings."
Becker electronically transferred funds from the bank's corresponding accounts to her own accounts, inflated expenses to a prepaid expense account and then electronically transferred the funds to her account. She took money from a certificate of deposit account and concealed the money in the bank's general ledger.
To perpetuate the scheme, Becker provided false information in the monthly reports to the board. She also provided false information to FDIC examiners and to state bank examiners.
Becker had been employed by the Jersey State Bank since approximately 1976. During her employment she held various positions, including assistant cashier, a director of the bank holding corporation, and executive vice president. Her responsibilities included being in charge of the bank's general ledger and the corresponding accounts, and she provided regular reports to the president and board members as to the bank's assets, stability and financial soundness.

John Ulczycki thinks 2012 should be the year motorcyclists in Illinois are required to wear helmets. Headgear saves lives and insurance costs for taxpayers, he thinks. “Illinois is only one out of three states without helmet laws,” Ulczycki said.

Friday picking up a '95 Suzuki RF900 from a buddy- been 17 years since my last- I can't wait. Looks like I have to take a rider's course up in Alton for my state certificate.. (Bunch of bull). Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look for affordable state minimum liability insurance? I have an agent (broker) I have had for years, but lately I am thinking I need to shop his numbers around rather than just blindly trusting him- any suggestions appreciated, thanks. (Any suggestions on what it might run- it is classified as group 15, whatever that means) Bob/ Gretchen, you guys, gals just saved me a buch of grief- they word it in such a way... We'll anyway- you don't HAVE to take it, you DO HAVE to take the written AND-, (unless I am mis-understanding again) a riding/driving test--- get this, including... Blah, blah, blah... Then it says "high speed cornering, driving in traffic"--- ?? (Hope the ride along is a chick- otherwise that might get a little weird!!) How do they manage that- LOL...
