13th edition of Cowboy Days set for Sept. 16-18

Nothing brings out the cowboy in a Texan like Plainview's Cowboy Days, so expect the town to be overrun by boots and buckles when the 13th edition is held Sept. 16-18.

Just don't expect fireworks.

While all of the other activities surrounding Cowboy Days will go on, the fireworks display - which had been postponed from July 4th due to dry conditions - has been canceled due to the ongoing drought.

Still, Cowboy Days will have something for everyone.

One highlight will be a parade, which includes a unique cattle drive, but the excitement will last all weekend.

The event will start Friday, Sept. 16 with a cowboy king and queen contest downtown, directed by Ricky Powell.

Jake Kellen, whose appearance is underwritten by Walmart and the Plainview Downtown Association, will perform at the Bands on Broadway concert and street dance near Broadway Brew.

Kellen also will perform Saturday at the Ollie Liner Center.

Activities on Saturday, Sept. 17 will begin early with registration for the Plainview Chamber of Commerce-sponsored Hale on Wheels Bike Ride and a 5K run. Gabriel Martinez and Ed Self are in charge of the bike ride, which was hugely popular last year, and Ron Appling is organizing the run. Participants will be on their way between 8:30-8:45 a.m., leaving Amigos and United Supermarket volunteers time to assist on the route. Members of Soroptimist International will man way stations for the bike ride.

New this year will be the Texas Tech University bike team coming to lead off the bike race.

A special attraction will be coffee and breakfast - chuck wagon-style - at the Ollie Liner Center beginning at 7:30 a.m. Three chuck wagons will provide prairie style breakfasts for $5.

Back downtown, kids will sign up for the annual Moo-a-thon race sponsored by the YMCA and hk2020 at the Herald. Kids participating will receive a T-shirt and wristband, which is good for free entertainment on the inflatables at the Ollie Liner Center.
