10: A secretive scandalMissouri Employers Mutual Insurance Co. was a quiet Columbia success story, staying out of the limelight as it built itself over 15 years into the dominant workers’ compensation insurer in the state.
That all changed when the company’s board of directors decided this year to fire former Gov. Roger Wilson, who had just led the company to its most profitable year ever.
Wilson was brought in early in 2009 after the company’s first president, Dennis Smith, retired. His dismissal put MEM’s operations and board members under scrutiny that is continuing. State Auditor Tom Schweich negotiated to perform the first review of the company’s operations by his office, and federal investigators were reportedly checking into political donations Wilson made in 2009.
No information has been released about the investigation of Wilson, but the company’s former chairman, Doug Morgan of St. Louis, was indicted in April on federal bank fraud charges. And former company board member Karen Pletz was named in a 24-count federal indictment in March that alleged theft, fraud and money-laundering while she was president of the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. Morgan and Pletz have since died.
Wilson has declined all requests for media interviews. Jim Owen, former chairman of the MEM board of directors, was named permanent president in December after serving in an interim role since June.
