'Black box devices' for new drivers

New drivers could have aeroplane-style black boxes installed in their vehicles in an effort to reduce insurance premiums and accidents in Northern Ireland, it has been claimed.

At a meeting, insurers and DoE minister Alex Attwood discussed the use of technology to monitor the behaviour of drivers.

It is hoped that the black box option, and others too, will go some way towards tackling rising car insurance premiums.

In Northern Ireland, premiums are 11% higher than in Great Britain. In rural areas, the difference can be up to 70%.

Nearly one in every five drivers who have recently passed their driving test have a crash of some sort during their first six months on the road.

Young motorists are twice as likely to cause a serious or fatal accident than older drivers are, according to the DoE.

Mr Attwood said: "Departmental officials have also been exploring with the local motor insurance industry representatives the potential availability in Northern Ireland of young driver 'Pay How You Drive' insurance products linked to in-car technology capable of monitoring driving performance."

Insurance providers in Great Britain have already piloted the scheme, which is unlikely to need legislation.

The scheme would be aimed at motorists who are under 25, and could mean lowering premiums due to evidence of good driving.

Your Questions About Car Insurance

Does comprehensive car insurance cover others not on the policy?

My Brother has a full comprehensive UK car insurance . Can I drive his car and be covered by the insurance even though I am not listed on the insurance and live at the same address. I have a full UK license, he claims I am covered because he gives me the permission to drive the car which according to him is right.

When you rent a car, you have to have full coverage on the care that you own (your personal vehicle) and then that will automatically carry over to the rental. If you do not have full coverage you can add it to your existing policy for the amount of time you’ll be renting the car OR just buy the insurance from the rental place. And to answer your other question, no your policy will not cover somebody else’s car just because you’re driving it. Insurance covers vehicles, NOT people, even if you were in an at fault accident, your friend/relative’s insurance would have to cover that loss.

How does the whole car insurance thing work?

I am a 19 year old boy. My parents are buying me my first car . It is a nice pre-owned car . How does the insurance for the car generally work? Is it required? I will be in college next year. Can they take care of my car insurance ? How does it work? I heard that they can put my car under their insurance . Is this true? Please explain.

If you park your car on your parent’s property, and never drive it anywhere, you might not need to have any insurance.

But if you are going to take that car out on the public highways, you need all sorts of different types of insurance to pay for medical expenses if anyone hurt in an accident, pay for repairs if any damage from accident, get another car if it is stolen, protect your assets (house, car bank accounts) from beign drained by law suits, and also keep you out of jail.
