Young, old find fav cars in different ways

DAYTONA BEACH - baby boomers and Generation Y (sometimes referred to as Millennials) are both buying small cars these days, but for many different reasons.

Baby boomers - those who grew up in the 1960s and 1970s - who buy Ford focuses Festivals and tend to be empty nesters looking to downsize and the gas mileage good value, said Roy Miller, sales manger at Gary Yeomans Ford Lincoln Mercury Mazda at Daytona International Auto Mall.

On the other hand, many buyers aged 18 and 29 are looking for a car that has good gas mileage and will save them money when they go to get insurance.

Younger buyers also like to shop for cars on the Internet and are attracted to vehicles with a lot of "features" such as the automatic parallel parking program on Ford's Focus, Miller said.

"They want all the bang for the buck that they can get. They want to buy a $13,000 car," Miller said, "that comes with the feel and capabilities of a $70,000 vehicle."

Older consumers are dominating the car buying market. Those 50 and older spent $87 billion on cars last year compared with $70 billion by those younger than 50, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Baby Boomers, meanwhile, are not completely adverse to technology. They like factory-installed entertainment and communications systems that allow users to make hands-free telephone calls and control music and other functions using voice commands.

Glenn Ritchey Jr., general manager at Jon Hall Hyundai on Nova Road, said his dealership is seeing a wide variety of buyers looking for its popular small cars, the Accent and the Elantra.

Boomers, Ritchey said, are attracted by the gas mileage and the warranty on the vehicles while younger consumers are looking for style first, and then the 5 year/60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty.

"Many (younger buyers) are going off to college and know they have a vehicle that they won't have to spend money on for five years," Ritchey said Friday.
