* As we get closer to the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, more and more new product news is streaming into the media. Various reports say that Honda's Acura luxury brand will unveil an unprecedented three new vehicles -- including the long-awaited successor to its legendary NSX exotic sports car -- on Jan. 9 at the show. Acura also will reveal its new ILX compact sport sedan and the 2013 model of its RDX crossover SUV at the show.
* We also got a look at the sixth-generation Mercedes-Benz SL roadster scheduled to be unveiled next month at the Detroit auto show. The 2013 SL will have a new, all-aluminum body shell that will weigh 275 pounds less.
* The Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra and Volkswagen Passat are finalists for the 2012 North American Car of the Year, and the BMW X3, Honda CR-V and Range Rover Evoque are finalist for the Truck of the Year. Three fuel-sipper cars and no "real truck".
* Ford Motor Co. will tap about 1,000 employees to test a software upgrade to MyFordTouch before it rolls out the latest version of the infotainment system on 2013 model vehicles. This week employees received a USB flash drive with the new software to conduct a month-long beta test of the system that addresses concerns consumers have expressed with the current system. Ford said the upgrade will make the system simpler, faster and more reliable.

Many fans of professional basketball are disappointed that the ongoing contract dispute between players and owners may end up canceling this year’s NBA season. But in Auburn Hills, the home of the Detroit Pistons, disappointment is turning into desperation.
Many businesses in Auburn Hills rely on the 41 games the Pistons play at the Palace each season. Pete Auger is the Auburn Hills city manager. He says the local economy supported by the games is more than just the thousand people who work at the Palace.
