Affordable Care Act helps young adults get health insurance

Young adults in Montana, like those across the nation, are taking advantage of a benefit in President Barack Obama's health care overhaul to ensure they have health insurance.

New data from the Census Bureau shows that uninsured rates for 18- to 24-year-old Montanans dropped from 30.1 percent in 2009 to 28.2 percent in 2010. That drop translates into about 4,549 young adults gaining coverage.

Montana is on a parallel track with a national trend that coincides with implementation of some aspects of the Affordable Care Act.

The new health care law allows young adults to remain on their parents' health plans until they turn 26. Until now, some health plans would only cover young adults if they were full-time students. Others imposed an age cutoff.

In a recent report, the government's National Center for Health Statistics found that the number of uninsured people ages 19-25 dropped from 10 million last year to 9.1 million in the first three months of this year.

In a separate survey by Gallup, data showed that the share of adults 18-25 without coverage dropped from 28 percent last fall to 24.2 percent by this summer. The drop equates to about 1 million or more young adults getting coverage.

After one year of new protections under the Patients' Bill of Rights, the numbers show these protections are working for Montanans, said U.S. Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., the chief architect of the Affordable Care Act.

"But this news isn't about data, it's about people, and every number represents a young Montanan and a family who now has the security of knowing they or their child can go to the doctor when they are sick or get the care they need in an emergency," Baucus said.

Making sure kids can stay on their parents' insurance longer is particularly important in today's tough economy because many working families are struggling with high tuition costs, and recent grads are having a tougher time finding jobs right out of school that provide insurance.
