After the storm: Lots of insurance questions

After last weekend’s surprising autumn snowfall, homeowners have lots of questions about whether their insurance policies cover the cost of removing toppled trees, replacing spoiled food or staying in a hotel unexpectedly.

Insured annual winter storm losses in the United States reached $2.6 billion last year, the highest losses from perilous snow and ice conditions since 2003, the Insurance Information Institute said, quoting an analysis by insurance giant Munich Re.

Here are some answers about what damage is covered by standard homeowner’s insurance policies, what is not covered and tips on how to make the claims process go more smoothly.

As Marshall McKnight, a spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance, pointed out, a homeowner’s policy is “the guide’’ determining what is and isn’t covered by the insurer.

“Consumers,’’ he said, “need to be familiar with their policies.’’

Downed trees, everywhere The damage caused by a tree or a heavy tree limb crashing onto a house or a garage is usually always covered although the cost of removing the tree may not be.

“It depends on the situation and there are subtle differences,’’ said Loretta Worters, vice president of communications for the New York City-based Insurance Information Institute.

“Typically, if a tree hits a car or a house, the insurer will have it removed,’’ Worters said. If it just falls onto the lawn or the street, she said, the insurance company may not cover the cost of removing it.

If one of your trees falls on a neighbor’s house or crashes into someone else’s deck, it’s up to the other property owner to file a claim with their insurance company. A tree that tears off a portion of a property owner’s house or breaks a window, causing furniture or floors to be damaged by snow or ice is also typically covered, Worters said.
