Detroit: New city leaders step forward

From emergency manager dictatorship over Detroit Public Schools, the 48-month cap on welfare assistance, cuts to unemployment benefits, elimination of the Low Income Efficiency Energy Fund, multiple attempted takeovers of the citys water department, legislation to bust unions and cap insurance benefits for automobile accident victims, driver responsibility fees and on and on, the crisis Detroiters face have compounded. Michigan Citizen: Thank you, Rev. Bullock for taking the time to come in and talk with us. The purpose of this interview is to sit down with those who are stepping up to the plate in leadership roles, particularly young Black men, and doing something about the chaos going on in our cities currently. First can you tell me a little about yourself and your background: I went to U of D Jesuit and graduated in 1994 at [age] 16. [Before that] I went to school at fathers church, where my parents started a school sort of like home school, but other children were there. After high school graduation, I went to Morehouse and studied philosophy and history. I came back to Detroit and got my masters in philosophy from Wayne State in 2003. Ive been preaching since I was 15 years old. I started my Ph.D. at Wayne State, but that didnt work out so I went to University of Chicago Divinity School to study religion. I lived there from 2003-05 and taught philosophy at St. Xavier in Illinois and commuted back here and taught classes at Marygrove, Wayne County Community College and Oakland County and [former] William Tinsdale. My mother died 18 years ago (in 1993) this past Saturday (Sept. 17). My real personal motivation of being in Detroit is to be close to my father. I love Detroit and all that, but if he wasnt here I might be in New York or Chicago and theres so many seeds here. So much undone a legacy of my fathers and my mothers. It evolves until you start pastoring in Highland Park and you see what youre up against.

Asperger's Syndrome Gets in Way of Work? Not at This Startup

Think Asperger's syndrome makes it impossible to hold down a job? Meet the software testers at a new U.S. startup: Katie Levin talks nonstop. Brian Tozzo hates driving. Jamie Specht is bothered by bright lights, vacuum cleaners and the feel of carpeting against her skin. Rider Hallenstein draws cartoons of himself as a DeLorean sports car. Rick Alexander finds it unnerving to sit near other people. Since Asperger's syndrome didn't become a standard diagnosis until the early 1990s, many of Aspiritech's software testers were adults when they first learned they were on the autism spectrum. But most research dollars have gone toward studying only children with autism, while adults have been neglected, said Molly Losh, an autism researcher at Northwestern University. Enter Aspiritech. The startup provides meaningful work (pay is $12 to $15 an hour) in a relaxed environment where bosses never yell if you're late and nobody minds if you need to be alone for a while. What's more, the company is building social skills. The software testers, who are in their 20s and 30s, are trained to work together and they take part in organized outings: miniature golf, bowling, eating at a restaurant. "We want to improve social skills among people who tend to be socially isolated," said Marc Lazar, Aspiritech's autism specialist. For many of them, software testing is not going to be their lifelong career, Lazar said, "but while they're here they're going to improve their job skills and they're going to learn what kind of behavior is expected on the job and they're going to have more to put on their resumes.
