Glazier keeps tradition going at Lowell shop

Paul Montemayer never has needed stitches. Not bad for a glazier.
Montemayer, 46, owns Lowell Glass & Trim Inc., lives near North Newton High School and has a Morocco address. He has been married to Denise for 17 years; they have two sons, Paul, 15, and Patrick, 11.
Montemayer was sewing a seat for a race car when I entered his shop at 7 a.m.

“I’m the youngest of seven children,” Montemayer began.
Paul, I recall your family living in Sumava Resorts. Memories?
“Rowing a boat to the bus stop after a flood when I was in third or fourth grade. I also remember Hettie Abbott’s Farmers Market. It wasn’t just a produce market. Hettie sold everything from live bait to Tonka trucks. At Christmastime, I still buy our food from Lukes’ Restaurant.”
How long has this place been here?
“This building has been a glass shop since the 1950s. My brother Tom worked here when he was in high school. It originally was called Lansing Glass.
“The business started out in Lansing, Ill. The owner had three storefronts. The big shop was in Hammond. This shop was their No. 2 shop, and they had another one in Valparaiso.
“A man by the name of Joe Martin worked for Lansing Glass and ended up buying them out in 1968; he changed the name to Lowell Glass. At one time, there were two glass shops in Lowell.”
When did you enter the scene?
“Joe wanted to retire; he got out of here in ’95. I bought the building in ’98 and reopened in April of ’99.

What I don't like is being forced to buy something from the private sector like auto or health insurance, so would rather take individual responsibility via non-profit government administrated programs for these things if mandated (eg, Social Security)

Nigel answers:You may also look into getting this fixed yourself. Even if the coverage is available, your deductible will probably still require you to pay for it out of pocket.
Safelite glass is a reputable company that can fix minor chips in windshields. I also believe they will even do it while you are at work as they come to you.
how to repair windshield chip?i got a chip in my windshield and trying to get it fixed. i didnt get the license plate of the truck where the rock came from, i tried to get it fixed from one of those free repair trucks near the mall because my insurance does cover it, and i tried getting it done at jiffy lube but i guess they only have a guy that comes in ever blue moon that can do those repairs. im not interested in doing it myself unless it is really simple i would prefer to just get it done professionally.
Nigel answers:Those kits you buy at auto stores are not worth the trouble. They are OK if you have an old junker and don’t want the chip to go into a crack…..but they look like crap. Take it in to the pros. I had one done on my windshield and I swear…I thought they put in another windshield, because I couldn’t see where it was fixed.
Did I get screwed on a windshield chip repair?I had my car windshield supposedly repaired but I can’t find any proof that they did anything. Unfortunately, i couldn’t supervise the job because I had to go back inside to work and it was freezing out. They said they would seal it so it wouldn’t spread, but I see no proof that they did anything. The tiny star is still there. I called them up and they weren’t very cooperative, in fact, the girl was downright bitchy. Does anyone know how to tell for sure if it’s sealed?
