Newton Falls man killed in crash

SOUTHINGTON - A Newton Falls man died in a one-car crash Wednesday morning in an area residents say is known for wrecks.

A car driven by Gary R. Gibson Jr., 52, of Broad St., dropped off U.S. Route 422 eastbound into a ditch about 9:35 a.m. The Chevrolet Cavalier flipped several times until it crashed into a tree at 5053 Route 422, about a half-mile west of state Route 305, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Gibson suffered head injuries and was dead at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt, according to the patrol report. The accident remains under investigation.

Walt Sherbourne, who owns the property, described a gruesome accident scene in the front yard. He also said he can recall at least eight instances in the last five years in which vehicles went off the road there. He said he believes the lanes are too narrow and there is only about 4 inches between the pavement and 6-foot deep ditches.

"It's chronic. You can bet in a week or two there will be another problem," Sherbourne said. "Don't be surprised."

Sherbourne said his father bought the property in 1952, and he bought it about 20 years ago. He said about five years ago, an 18-wheeler drove into the same ditch and dumped lime on his property. Another time, a towing company was pulling out someone who slid into the ditch and other cars failed to stop, causing a seven-car pile up.

Three years ago, Sherbourne said, a woman driving a Ford Falcon drove off the road and into the ditch, landing with the driver's side facing down. When Sherbourne and his wife arrived along with their son-in-law, a registered nurse, the woman was unconscious with her nose submerged in rainwater. They were able to save the woman's life, he said.

Within the last year, Sherbourne said a trash truck with a Dumpster attached went off the road and smashed into his driveway culvert. The truck flipped but no one was injured.

With the insurance money from the damaged driveway, he filled in the ditch on one side of his driveway with tile and dirt, making the property level on the opposite side of where Gibson went off the road.
