Contaminated gasoline at a Mississauga Esso station leaves cars unable to start
A Mississauga gas station shut down its unleaded gasoline pumps on Monday after it was discovered that it contained contaminated gas that, if left, won’t allow cars to start.
Water leaked into an Esso station’s regular unleaded tank at its location at 3405 Glen Erin Dr., according to Tom McMillan, spokesperson for Parkland Fuel Corporation, which supplies fuel to that location.
The station’s regular unleaded pumps were closed at 1:30 p.m. Monday after a few complaints of cars not starting. The station’s premium and diesel tanks haven’t been affected.
About a handful of complaints have come in, but McMillan suspects more vehicles have been affected.
“As long as you don’t leave the gas in there for an extended period of time, corrosion won’t be an issue,” McMillan said. “But get it to a mechanic quickly, get a sample of the fuel and keep your receipt in order to make your claim.”
The car’s gas tank, fuel lines and engine will likely have to be drained, he added.
Contaminated fuel tanks can occur after a heavy rain or snowfall and if the drainage system isn’t working properly.
“Across Canada we do see this from time to time,” McMillan said.
He wasn’t sure when the gas station will be able to pump out unleaded gasoline, but suspects it will only be a matter of days.
McMillan said the gas station’s owner has contacted his insurance company, which is ready to handle claims.
Motorists who recently filled up can contact the station or customer service at 1-800-567-3776 to have their claim processed.
