Love and lawsuits: Tickets to ride - the man behind the transit scandal
Sally Simon sighs deeply over the phone from Toronto. She is alarmed that she has been found and ashamed of the circumstances through which she was sought. But she understands the phone call.
Simon was, she admits, Tony Sharma's companion for 11 months spanning 2008 and 2009. It was a tumultuous period for her, one she looks back on with disbelief.
Among many things Sharma, a married father of two in Sudbury, was accused of during this period are insurance fraud, criminal harassment and impersonating a doctor. He faced a lawsuit for $750,000 following a car crash and his Sudbury business was successfully sued after failing to remit more than $866,000 in revenues to the City of Greater Sudbury.
All of this in a span of months.
And Simon (Not her real name. As the victim of criminal harassment, she has asked for, and The Star has agreed to give her, anonymity) was his mistress in Toronto most of this time.
At one point, Sharma was a successful businessman in
Sudbury, owning up to three cafés with plans to franchise
them across Ontario.
But in a series of contracts the city signed and renewed with Sharma's company from 1999 to 2009 to sell transit tickets on behalf of the city, hundreds of thousands of dollars went missing.
By the time the city issued a letter of default against 1211250 Ontario Inc., under which Zio's Tuck Shop and Zio's In Transit Café were operated, the company owed Greater Sudbury Transit $866,000 for the proceeds of ticket sales not remitted to the city.
In its articles of incorporation, Tony Sharma is the president, secretary and one of two directors in 1211250 Ontario Inc. His wife, Lisa Sharma, is the only other director.
The city recovered $287,910 in assets when it took over the kiosk on Sept. 4 2009. In the spring of 2010, the city won an uncontested judgment against the company of $578,796.
However, none of that money has been recovered. Over the past couple of weeks, it has been revealed the city is renewing its attempts to recover that money. As it does so, it's worth looking back and asking: How did things unravel so spectacularly for Sharma and his businesses and where, exactly, did all that money go?
