The first few times Bob King rode the rails in his 1982 Fairmont MT-19 motorcar, he'd reach out to grab a steering wheel every time he went around a curve.

"It's a lot more personal in the speeder," King says of his trip-of-a-lifetime on the Alaskan Railroad via motorcar, or track speeder as they're also known. "You see things at a slower pace. You see things up close. I see a lot of things along the tracks that I never see on the train."

Motorcars are retired gasoline-, diesel- or propane-powered people carriers used in various capacities over the last century. Most often used to haul railroad workers quickly from one job site to the next, they were retired in favor of Hi-Rail cars, the now-familiar road vehicles fitted with special train wheels for operating on the tracks.

Hobbyists, like King, buy and fix up the track speeders for various reasons. Many are railroad enthusiasts, and national clubs like the North American Railcar Operator's Association make it possible for groups to take extended trips on unused or seldom used railroad lines.

That's what makes Alaska so special for the Motorcar Operators West, an affiliate of NARCOA, which is on the tail end of a two week trip that took them from Anchorage to Fairbanks , Wasilla to Seward and back to Anchorage.

Alaska has one main railroad, and in most states, a railroad this busy would be off limits to club members. But a unique relationship established many years ago provides the opportunity for club members to come up every few years and tour the Last Frontier at 25 miles per hour.
