Help Camp McGovern win $150000 grant

WEST GREY -A local children's camp is in the running to receive a $150,000 grant and you can help make it happen.

Camp McGovern has had its name put forward to potentially receive an Aviva Community Fund grant. The grants are sponsored by Avivia Insurance and brokers from across the country are able to nominate worthy causes in their communities, such as Camp McGovern. The brokers supporting the camp's nomination include Donovan Insurance Brokers Inc., Lackner McLennan Ins Inc. and Craig McDonald Reddon Ins. Brks. Ltd.

"In the insurance world Aviva knows how to provide the best protection for your car, home, or business," the company wrote on its website. "But, we recognize that you know better than anyone what's needed to improve your community."

The Aviva Community Fund competition has been created to help make a positive impact in Canadian communities, through any number of initiatives, including providing new opportunities for at-risk youth, education, helping the environment, or cultural activities, among many others. The fund looks to support both local and national initiatives for change

Camp McGovern is a local children's camp (located on concession 6 between Hanover and Durham) that caters to children from Big Brothers Big Sisters Agencies, United Way and Social Service Agencies such as Family and Children's Services.

"We service over 25 communities in Central Ontario, and over 30 children service agencies benefit from our camp," representatives from the camp wrote on its voting page. "The financial focus is to upgrade facilities to meet the increased camper population, which continues to grow, be wheelchair accessable, and to meet the changing health and safety codes.

"Additionally the camper demographics have changed and we are hosting older children and youths who require more challenging activities," the camp added.

From now until Oct. 19, you can vote to help Camp McGovern make it out of the first round and increase its chances of receiving money from the Aviva Community Fund. All you have to do is visit http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf11554and vote once a day from now until Wednesday.
