According to the fund’s website, the more than 25,900 claims since 1979 have cost an estimated $74 billion.

Lund’s bill would allow drivers to cap coverage at $250,000, $500,000, $1 million or $5 million.

The proposal is ardently opposed by hospital officials and the medical community throughout Michigan.

Flint’s Hurley Medical Center would take the biggest hit of the three local systems, according to estimates from the Michigan Health and Hospital Association.

The hospital receives about $14.4 million from the fund annually to pay for treatment of accident victims.

“It’ll be difficult to maintain the trauma services we have here,” said Patrick Wardell, president and chief executive officer of Hurley, who said the hospital’s traumatic brain injury unit could be affected as well.
