'Natural leader' led projects for city, youth, people in need
To paraphrase a cliche, you can’t judge an active, humble, determined community volunteer by his exterior.
Those who know Glenn McMennamy best — his lifelong friends and those who have worked alongside him in numerous projects — unanimously agree he has an irascible side.
He’s been known to be tough, stern, gruff, even a little cranky. But look further and those same friends say they see a teddy bear, a softie, a gentle soul who has spent a life serving the city through big projects and quietly helping those who need a hand.
“He’s a man of total integrity,” said former Amarillo mayor Jerry Hodge. “Glenn’s a man’s man. He has the biggest heart and loves the underdog. He’s one of the kindest, gentlest persons I’ve ever known. That being said, he can be a grouchy old man too.”
Said McMennamy: “I can’t argue with any of that.”
McMennamy, 78, the 2011 Amarillo Globe-News Man of the Year, has left a lasting mark on the city through several decades.
His tenacity and vision have helped lead major efforts, such as securing funding for the Amarillo National Center and other major improvements at the Tri-State Fairgrounds, to his work as co-chairman of the building committee of the Mary E. Bivins Foundation that has spearheaded millions of dollars in construction and remodeling.
Then there are the quiet gestures, random acts of anonymous kindness, like getting a group of friends together to buy a used car and a year of insurance for a homeless Tascosa student as he approached graduation two years ago, helping a Bivins employee who lost a home in the February wildfires, to recently rounding up money for a Sam’s Club gift card for an acquaintance with the words: “From Santa Claus.”
“He’s always doing something for someone else,” said funeral director Maurice Schooler, who met McMennamy at Amarillo High in the early 1950s. “He’s a giver. He does not slow down. He’s perpetual in helping people.
