Used car buyers could find themselves in hot water with their car insurance provider if they do not check thoroughly for hidden modifications that they may not have noticed when initially inspecting the vehicle. Sometimes it is obvious when a car has been modified with garish paintjobs, body-kits or go-faster stripes, but other modifications, particularly those made to the engine, are harder to spot by the untrained eye.
Drivers should check all the paperwork rigorously as well as casting their eye over the car itself and quizzing the seller. The consequences of not doing this could be quite severe. If a driver needs to make a claim and their insurance company finds that the car has undeclared modifications they may refuse to pay out, meaning that the driver has to pay out of their own pocket. Furthermore, if the insurance company refuses to pay out this may cause problems if the driver wants to buy insurance in the future.
If a driver discovers a modification mid-way through their insurance policy they have two options. Either have the modification removed, or inform their car insurance company of the modification. Informing the insurance company of modifications will sometimes make the premium go up as modified car insurance is commonly more expensive or it may result in the insurance being cancelled (meaning the driver will need to find another insurer). Either way, this is a small price to pay for the peace of mind that comes with knowing that the vehicle is properly insured.
