A high percentage of daylight accidents involve elderly drivers. Your age can affect your auto insurance rates as well as the ability to purchase a policy.

Try and avoid getting points on your license. The number one cause of high premiums is a bad driving record. If you do get cited for a moving violation, you should opt for traffic school to keep it off your record.

Lapses in coverage are a sure way to see an increase in premiums. Lapses often occur when you change your carriers or even when you simply change policies. When companies find out about gaps they will raise insurance rates.

Search for rates from a variety of companies before selecting the auto insurance that works best for you. You will have to do some legwork to find a policy with a good reputation and a low premium.

You can save a lot of money on insurance costs if you take a defensive driving course. Not only do many providers offer a discount for completing such a course, but you will also learn to become a better driver. You can find any number of these classes at driving schools across the country. They will also be found on the Internet.

If you’ve been thinking about adding aftermarket parts to your car, check with your insurance company to see if they will cover the damage of these parts. Most insurance companies do not provide coverage for these parts, but they will pay for what the value of your car is with these parts added on.

The cheapest quote may not necessarily be the best policy. Cheap may say it all or it may be a great find. Research the company first and examine the policy closely for any hidden details, before purchasing a policy.

If you are ever in a car accident and need to file a claim, you should make it a point to thoroughly document everything related to the incident. If you have the opportunity, use your mobile phone or device to take pictures of the accident. Some people even keep a camera in the car for just this purpose.
