Desjardins' pivotal roleIt's odd that in her summary of Larry Desjardins' political career (Our true 'champion,' Feb. 9), Alexandra Paul mentions the part Desjardins played in the fall of the Howard Pawley government in 1988 but leaves out the story of Desjardins' pivotal role in the formation of the Ed Schreyer government almost 20 years previously.
Desjardins was then a senior member of the Manitoba Liberal caucus, and when the NDP won 28 out of 57 seats in the 1969 election, it was Desjardins' support that allowed them to form a minority government. In fact, he left the Liberal caucus and sat as a "Liberal Democrat."
In the historic Autopac debate of 1970, Desjardins' support for Bill 56 was arduously sought by both sides. Ultimately, it would be his vote that would create public auto insurance in Manitoba.

In 1947-48, I was a Grade 9 student on the junior basketball team at St. Paul's High School. We were invited to Crookston, Minn., for a game. Larry Desjardins and Paul Cholakis were our chaperones.
It was a wonderful experience, and I remember constant laughing and joking on the trip. I was 13, and these two men were only 10 years older.
While spending a weekend with young teenagers does not qualify as their most significant accomplishments, they were role models even at that age. Many of us owe them a great debt of gratitude.

Thankful for veto
Contrary to Lloyd Axworthy (Vetoes underline need to reform UN, Feb. 8), I, for one, am very glad that someone (in this case Russia and China) has stood up to the murderous habits of the U.S. and the U.K. After seeing a no-fly, pro-human rights resolution on Libya turn into 7,000 bombing missions, the overthrow of its government and the murder of its leader, and the imposition of a regime of torturers, it is some small relief that the resolution on Syria was stopped.
