Arson attempt makes Autopac's list of top five frauds
Want to know a way not to scam Autopac? Here’s a hint: don’t set yourself on fire.
Manitoba Public Insurance has released its annual list of the top five frauds of the year and a Winnipeg man setting himself on fire while trying to defraud Autopac is the top one.
MPI said the man had agreed to torch his friend’s old car for insurance proceeds so he poured gasoline into empty four-litre milk containers.
But while committing the act, the man spilled gasoline on himself, setting himself on fire. This resulted in second-degree burns to half his body, which were still visible when Autopac investigators interviewed him.
What’s more, the man later pleaded guilty to arson and got a one-year jail sentence, while his friend, the vehicle owner, got a 15-month conditional sentence after pleading guilty to arson to his own property.
Last year, MPI’s Special Investigations Unit saved Manitoba auto insurance ratepayers $9 million while investigating about 3,000 claims.
