David Knopf didn't take kindly to suffering a two-goal loss to West Ranch in the Foothill League boys' soccer opener, so the Hart junior made sure he left the Wildcats' field Friday not only with revenge, but a share of first place.
Knopf scored in the 28th minute and Nico Ferrero added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute to lift visiting Hart to a 2-0 victory, helping the Indians (13-2-1, 4-1-1) force a first-place tie with Canyon (7-5-2, 4-1-1).
"I hate losing, but it definitely helped our team. If we had to lose (in league), then the first one was the best to get it out of the way," Knopf said. "We've made more out of the chances we're given. We waited for our opportunities and we definitely capitalized on their mistakes."
Hart's first goal came after West Ranch's Alex Manzo came off his line to knock down a Gabe Robinson throw-in, allowing Knopf to chip an 8-yard shot over the goalkeeper's head. Ferrero headed a pass from Cole Lambert -- who prevented a West Ranch (8-3-3, 3-1-2) goal by Connor Ashlock in the 44th minute -- off a Wildcats' defender inside the left post for an insurance goal.
"We want to win league, so we knew we had to win this," Hart coach Adonay Jovel said. "We finally had a presence in the offensive midfield and our defenders (Cole, Gabe and Ryan Dolan) rotated and communicated well and that made a big difference."
- Erik Boal Canada 2, Blair 1: Armaan Zare scored twice, including the winning goal in the final four minutes to lead the host Spartans (11-5-3, 4-0-2 Rio Hondo). Filip Franke and Armand Bagramyan had an assist each for La Canada.
Chaminade 1, Loyola 0: Matt Rosendo scored off a corner kick from Karam Gill five minutes into the Mission League match for host Eagles.
St. Francis 3, Alemany 1: Billy McCreary scored twice for St. Francis (6-7-7, 5-1-3 Mission).
