Chamber leader aims to up member benefits
"For my year, we're really looking at member benefits," said Robin, who was appointed as board chairman in October and is general manager at Mazda of Midland. "We just recently finished a health care co-op, so we can offer businesses a 7 percent discount on their health care quotes."
Robin was appointed chairman-elect at the start of the chamber's fiscal year because David O'Neil, who was the chairman, is moving to Bryan-College Station with Wells Fargo. Robin was asked to step in, said Bobby Burns, president and CEO of the chamber.
"Losing David was really disappointing because he was such a strong leader, but we're very lucky that Chris was prepared to slide in and ready to go work," Burns said.
Burns continued his praise.
"Chris brings 10 years of experience on the chamber board along with a very strong business background. He has already shown he's going to be a very strong leader and a very strong chairman of the board," he said.
Since joining the chamber's board as a leader in 2001, Robin's roles have included vice-chairman of membership and vice-chairman of economic development.
"I joined just to kind of give back some community service work," he said.
The Midland and Odessa chambers of commerce announced earlier this month that its Permian Basin Health Insurance Cooperative will be offered in conjunction with United Healthcare. Robin said the chamber has seen similar initiatives in other West Texas communities and thought it would benefit chamber members here.
"The idea just came from brainstorming about how to offer our members more tangible benefits," he said.
In January, the chamber will host a "State of the Economy" event that will feature speakers and educate members on the economic conditions, he said. Later in the year, it also will host a "State of Education" event.
Paul Cain, former chamber board chairman, made education a main focus during his leadership, and Robin said he doesn't want to lose momentum on Cain's work.
