Indiana Drivers Unprepared for Holiday Travel Mayhem

Drivers say they plan on taking a road trip of two or more hours during the upcoming holiday season. That's according to the Allstate 2011 Good Hands Roadside Assistance Survey, which also found that drivers, despite having considerable experience with disabled vehicles, underestimate the chance they will encounter mayhem on the road.

The survey reveals that the average drivers say it's not likely that they would find themselves in a situation where their car is not drivable due to a mechanical breakdown or a number of other common problems. This sense of security is even shared by 82 percent of American drivers who have personally experienced four or more such situations.

Break down

Despite what drivers say they think will happen, the reality is that the majority of Hoosiers have experienced an auto breakdown or other situation:

Eighty-six percent have experienced a flat tire, 83 percent have had a dead car battery, 60 percent had a car that wouldn't start, and 76 percent have been in an accident. Sixty-three percent say they have locked keys in the car, 26 percent have lost keys, 34 percent have run out of gas, and 29 percent have had their car vandalized, broken into or stolen. drivers say they keep up with all routine maintenance and service on their car. Nationally, of the 62 percent who report regular maintenance, an average of 3.7 occurrences, while drivers who report less frequent maintenance and service report 5.7 occurrences. Nationally, drivers who keep up with all routine maintenance are less likely than those who don't keep up with all maintenance to have: Had a dead battery (72 percent versus 87 percent) Had a car that would not start (62 percent versus 80 percent) Run out of gas (33 percent versus 46 percent) Nearly a quarter of express a high level of confidence in their own ability to fix common problems that can occur to their cars while driving.

Find an independent agent, and tell him you have moved from CA to IN and you need insurance. That's assuming your current insurance doesn't cover you in IN, call them and ask about transferring it they do. Do not cancel your current insurance until your new policy is in effect.

Once you are insured and have your card covering you in IN, go to the DMV.

For registration: Register Vehicle as New Indiana Resident To register your vehicle as a new Indiana resident, you will need to visit a license branch and provide your vehicle's Certificate of Origin and Odometer Statement. You will also need to show proof of insurance.

New residents must also apply for a title before receiving a license plate at a branch.

You will also turn in your old drivers license for a new one.

An applicant for a new Indiana operator license who holds a valid photo license issued by another state, the District of Columbia or U.S. Territory must successfully pass a written and vision test.

And you really need to do all that within 30 days of moving, though that limit is fairly elastic. I can tell you that Indiana has done a great job of improving service at its license branches in the last year or two, so it shouldn't be too painful.

As to the rates, so much depends on where you live that it's impossible to compare. Unless you really like Geico, shop around and see if anyone else is better.
