Insurance renewal increases up above inflation hit drivers hard
Motorists across the UK are paying a typical increase of over 12% on their renewals from a year ago – or £92 on the average policy.
That’s way above the 4.5% mark for inflation, though the last quarter thankfully saw the trend reverse with a 1.6% fall across all the quotes compiled by Confused.com.
One-fifth of cash-strapped drivers would be persuaded to ditch their current car insurance provider if they could save just £25 or less, according to research by MoneySupermarket.com.
On average people wanted a saving of £54 in order to bother switching.
One in four drivers automatically renew car insurance with their existing provider rather than shop around, and they would only be tempted to switch for a saving of at least £78.
However, all the comparison sites boast far higher gains for drivers who use their sites to switch – MoneySupermarket claims a typical saving of almost £350 can be achieved.
Pete Harrison, the site’s car insurance expert, said: “British motorists are really feeling the financial strain and our research has found one in five drivers are only looking for savings of £25 on their car insurance premiums to justify the move to a better value premium.”
The big comparison sites are currently mopping up a huge proportion of TV advertising spend as they push for new business.
However, online buyers should pay close attention to policy features, rather than price alone.
Mike Powell of financial research company, Defaqto, says it is possible to get different quotes from the same insurance company on different comparison sites. “This is partly to do with the business relationships the companies have with the sites, but it is also to do with the type of risk questions the sites ask.” So trying more than one site may be a good idea.
He says it is essential when you click through to the company’s own site that you check that the answers on which the quote is based are accurate.
