Anna DeWese, principal of Fessenden Elementary School, is one of three finalists for Principal of the Year in Florida. The others are from Brevard and Orange counties.
The Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership is awarded by the Florida Department of Education. The winner will be announced Wednesday in Tallahassee.
Fessenden is the longest continuously-run school in Marion County, according to a news release from Marion County Public Schools. DeWese has been principal since 2008. Under her leadership, the school received an “A” on last year’s FCAT, up from a “D” the year before.
DeWese graduated from Forest High and Central Florida Community College, earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from St. Leo University, a master’s in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University and a doctorate in education from Argosy University.
She joined the school district in 1998 as a teacher at Madison Street Academy, transferred to Sunrise Elementary in 2003 and became assistant principal for discipline at Howard Middle School the next year. She transferred to Fessenden in 2006 as assistant principal.
Gay Street, current assistant principal, also will represent Marion County at the luncheon in Tallahassee, as the district representative for Assistant Principal of the Year, according to the release.
3-day women’s outdoor workshop set for March
The three-day Becoming an Outdoors Woman workshop will be held March 9-11 at the Ocala Conservation Center in the Ocala National Forest.
Although designed with women in mind, the workshop is open to anyone 18 and older who wants to improve outdoor skills and participate in recreational activities.
In four, 3½ -hour sessions, the workshop teaches some of the basic skills associated with fishing, hunting and other forms of outdoor recreation, at all levels of physical activity, with hands-on experience.
