Behind The Wheel: Fayetteville drivers rank among safest

The Behind the Wheel impression of Fayetteville drivers is that many of them drive too fast, change lanes too often, cut in front of other drivers too much and take too many risks.

But despite all that, the Allstate Insurance Co. believes our drivers are pretty safe.

Of America's 200 cities, Fayetteville ranked 39 on the company's America's Best Drivers Report, released last month. The city moved up one notch from last year's report and is the second safest larger city in the state, according to the report.

A Fayetteville driver will get into a collision, on average, every 10.7 years.

The No. 1 city for safe driving, according to the report, is Fort Collins, Colo., for the second year in a row.

In North Carolina, Cary is the top rated, coming in at No. 21, dropping two notches from 19th last year. The average years between collisions there is 11.4.

Following Fayetteville, in order, are Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Raleigh, Durham and Charlotte.

The rankings are based on Allstate's analysis of insurance claims data.

In a news release, Allstate spokesman John Heid said: "We salute Fayetteville's best drivers and recognize their safe driving skills, which make all of our communities safer places to live, work and raise families."

Behind the Wheel remains skeptical that Allstate has the right Fayetteville, but the company appears to be sticking to its claim.

Parents of teens anxious to get behind the wheel should know about the driving logs that new drivers will have to fill out, starting in January.

The logs are available already at the website for the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles.

New drivers will have to log 60 hours of drive time, including 10 hours at night, under the supervision of a parent or other designated driver in order to graduate from a Level 1 Learner's Permit to a Level 2 limited provisional license. An additional 12 hours must be logged, with six hours of night driving, to step up to a Level 3 provisional license.
