Vic Falk’s wife, Jacqueline, was diagnosed with the disease in 2002 after a series of inexplicable falls. After 44 years of marriage, Falk has learned there are good times and bad.
“Some of it’s like being at the sea -- you got the sun and the sand and the good times, relaxation, and you enjoy each other,” he said. “She was my best friend. She still is my best friend, but the communication isn’t there anymore.”
He said as she drifts further out, he feels like he’s running up and down the shore, hoping for a way to bring her back in.
“You’re going to be able to grab her and things are going to be OK and they never are,” he said. “That’s where we are now.”
Jacqueline was athletic, running 3 km before breakfast and another 3 km in the evening. Initially, a neurologist saw no indications of the disease.
Around the time she got a new doctor she had another fall while babysitting, leaving her with a concussion.
MRIs turned up not only Huntington’s disease, but also three aneurysms.
Jacqueline ran out of the doctor’s office and Falk was left to absorb the information.
“When I first heard about it I was numb,” he said.
While Falk was devastated, his father put it in perspective.
“She’s not dead yet, he said, there’s still a lot of living,” Falk said.
