Farmers Acquires 21st Century Insurance « Hot Insurance Home

April 17, American International Group bailed out of theauto insurancebusiness Thursday, selling Woodland Hills-based 21st Century Insurance toFarmers InsuranceGroup 1.9 billion. Los Angeles based-Farmers, a subsidiary of Services Group ZurichFinancial, keep the brand of the 21st century.

The agreement will make farmers Auto insurer of the nation's third largest behind State Farm and Allstate and the largest in California, the company said.

"We are excited about what it can do for us in the future," Farmers CEO Robert Woudstra said in a conference call.

He noted that the operations will be complementary, as the 21st Century sells its products online and over the phone while farmers have a network of agents.

"Research clearly shows that insurance consumers more and more commercial, quotes and purchase insurance products online," said Woudstra.

"What this transaction really does put us in position ... to sell additional products that customers need to, but 21st Century does not sell. "

Farmers provides home, auto, business, specialty products, people and offers financial services.

The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter and includes Farmers assuming $ 100 million 21st Century outstanding debt.

21st Century includes the activities of AIG Direct and Agency Auto former company. It operates in 49 states and Washington, DC, and has more than 2.4 million customers and insures more than 4 million vehicles across the country.

The agreement also gives farmers a market presence geographically broader and more diversified across the country, including the east coast - a key target market for future growth.

AIG, which recently cut 500 jobs in the 21st century, is selling a number ofbusinesses to help pay 182.5 billion dollars in federal bailout funds it received since last December.

Woudstra said that the 21st century will continue to operate from its headquarters in Warner Center. Companies have different operating infrastructure so that it is too early to say how many jobs could be lost.
